A Gradient of Eggs

Couldn't help but notice this funny assortment of eggs this morning in the kitchen.

ok so for the LONGEST time I've wanted to make something fun with pony beads. I got the idea when my friends and I were making bracelets before ETD POP 2012. 

I then utilized this craft further when the key for the pod on top of my car wouldn't come out, and we were due to drive from LA to Palo Alto. It would have been really bad if the pod flew up on that road trip.

Then I taught myself how to make a cuff: 

Then I started out with the idea of making a vinyl record. 

Attempt #1

This started from the center, around a bracelet, and grew outward. It didn't work because as it expanded, it grew big holes in certain spaces and it wouldn't lay flat. 

I started over, using a peyote-bead stringing method (going across by rows). It was hard to come up with a perfect circle design, but ultimately I found some helpful sites and tutorials. 

Final Result

The record "melts" off like a Dali-esque clock. I hired my friend and we did a photoshoot. So fun and thrilled to have completed and designed my first art-director projected!

Update on Jars.

Oh, the Joy of Jars. As you can see in earlier posts, I conceptualized my initial design as a very flat image against a black background with the idea of using an ink-tape-transfer technique. But because of my DIY-esque method, it was very hard to read against the spices inside. That's the problem with clear backgrounds.
Fail early, fail often, they say....

So, new design, new technique.

Here's my new personal money saving jar ($2/week) with my new design. Didn't they used to call those piggy banks?




Can be done in these simple steps:

1. print out design with a laser printer
2. tape over front of design
3. put in warm water
4. take out and scratch out back with fingernail
5. place on surface (jar)
6. mod podge
7. enjoy!

Primary Colors Song

I suppose OK GO are getting more famous for their videos than their music now but for a good reason.
This video is great and they use stop motion to their complete advantage, using home made "special effects" to blend colors. I personally want to see them take this further and explain more to me about the intricate system of colors.
