1. Have a brilliant portfolio. Sounds obvious, but, you know…
2. Have a website. A Flickr page. A blog. A zine. Anything that shows that you’re a proper design nut.
3. Find out who to contact: Letters that start ‘Dear Sir / To Whom it may concern’ suggest you haven’t done even the basic research.
4. Don’t spend ages telling them why you’d benefit from a placement, but do spend a while telling them why they’d benefit from having you as a placement.
5. Be flexible on your timings.
6. Proof read your email / CV / portfolio. Then do it again. And again. Then get someone else to do it a couple of times too
